Title IX at 50: We Need It As Much As Ever!

ZOOM Webinar on Saturday, January 22, at 3 p.m.
View at home or at a small "watch party" (see below)
Three lawyers walk into a room … and it’s Amy G’s ZOOM room! The topic is Title IX. Listen in as Amy engages in conversation about the law that prohibits discrimination based on sex. It’s been nearly 50 years since the law went into effect. Why are we still talking about it today? Can it be enforced? Do you know your rights? What needs to be done next?
Amy Gutierrez, host
Better known as Amy G, Amy is an 8-time Emmy-award winning producer, reporter, and host, covering the San Francisco Giants since 2008 while also serving as a national correspondent for the MLB Network. Born in 1973, she is a direct beneficiary of Title IX.
Amy’s partners in conversation are:
  • Maha Ibrahim, Equal Rights Advocates, Staff Lawyer
ERA protects and expands economic and educational access and opportunities for women and girls through legislative advocacy, direct services, and litigation. Maha’s areas of expertise include civil rights, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and Title IX policy.
  • Elizabeth Kristen, Legal Aid At Work, Director of Gender Equity & LGBT Rights Program
LAAW is a nonprofit legal services organization that assists low-income, working families facing employment discrimination and harassment based on gender. Elizabeth directs LAAW’S Fair Play for Girls in Sports Project, which spurs schools to treat girls equally on and off the field.
  • Kim Turner, Coaching Corps, Director of the Gender Equity Initiative
Coaching Corps is committed to recruiting, training and supporting coaches so that they may guide youth in under-resourced communities to ensure kids can benefit from the positive impact sports and coaches can have on their lives.
Sign up on our website: aauwpetaluma.com to get the Webinar link, which will be sent on January 21st. You will be contacted about the watch parties.
More about the January Program Option: Watch Parties
Party Time: Popcorn, Brownies, and Program
ZOOM brings us our speakers but members bring us together. Plan to join one of our “watch parties” to view the January 22 program together. The following is the plan as of the publication of the January Perspective but is subject to change in the event COVID becomes a factor.
  • We will meet in members’ homes with no more than six people in each group.
  • Vaccination and RSVP required
  • The location will be sent to you a few days before the event.
  • Early RSVP appreciated to help with planning.
You all know that Title IX supports essential AAUW priorities and we are promising snacks as an added incentive to entice you to come.

Please RSVP to Jean Reed, [email protected], if you are interested in joining a watch party!

Ted Talk Section Preview of Title IX
Influence of Title IX on Billie Jean King's career and life
The Ted Talk section is having a look at Title IX prior to the January 22 program. We will meet (virtually), view, and discuss a Ted Talk by Billie Jean King. She mentions the influence the enactment of Title IX had on her career and life as an activist for inclusivity.
If you would like to join us but are not on the Ted Talk Section enrollment list, contact Stefanie Capps, [email protected]. She will send you the link. We will meet on Tuesday, January 18, at 3 p.m. This month’s host is Kris U’Ren.

President's Message
While preparing a holiday letter to some friends from out of town, I wrote, “Who ever thought that we would still be wearing masks and being cautious indoors? Once again, I am so grateful to be retired!” Life is much more difficult for our colleagues who are working.

I am also grateful to be a part of AAUW Petaluma. It is remarkable the way our Branch adapted to Pandemic Life, so that now it seems natural. When you read this newsletter, you will see a variety of meeting types – indoors, outdoors, online, and hybrids. Each one has advantages and disadvantages, but all can be informative and fun.

Our Holiday Event was a lot of fun. I had doubts that a luncheon without lunch would be so enjoyable, but it was great – crafts, trivia, readings, and time to chat. Changing tables several times meant that you got to see everyone. Many thanks to Rory, Stephanie, Jean, and all the planners!

Looking ahead, by now you know that 2022 is the 50th anniversary of Title IX – the federal law that required full equality for boys and girls in education. We know it best for its effect on women’s sports, but it contributed to many other aspects of education. We will have a chance to learn more at our January Branch Meeting, January 22 at 3:00.
Happy New Year!

Looking forward to seeing you all in 2022!
Co-President Anne Taylor
